Physical Health Self-Care Tips for Moms

Being mindful of your physical well-being is crucial when implementing successful self-care tips for moms. What you put into you, will come out.

So if you’re consuming nothing but trash foods, you’re going to feel like absolute garbage! Alternatively, if you fuel your body with the right foods, you will experience dramatic changes in your mental clarity, energy levels, and overall health.

Proper nutrition and exercise, also play significant roles in maintaining mental health. So, how do you get started?

1. Explore Enjoyable Exercise

Find an exercise that you enjoy and commit to thirty minutes a day. Exercising is great for your heart health and circulation. It’s imperative for living a healthy life.

Additionally, it can relieve depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, and other mental health obstacles. I recently discovered Yoga and it’s been life-changing. Especially, if you have back and neck problems.

The amount of immediate relief I experience doing 20-30 minutes of yoga each day is incredible. The pain between my shoulder blades from being busty is minimal on days that I do yoga. Additionally, I have seen a drastic reduction in the number of headaches I endure.

Furthermore, I enjoy having my own yoga mat and fabulous yoga accessories to create a space for myself to spend thirty-minutes preparing my body and mind for the day.

Using yoga blocks and yoga resistance bands have been helpful with me during the beginner stages. Additionally, they are great at helping with confidence if, like me, you’re a bit overweight.

Because the gyms are closed due to Covid, I opted to purchase a couple of exercise machines that fit my exercise wants and needs. There are thousands of exercise machines to choose from. So I simplified my choices with a cardio fitness bike and an ab sculpting machine.

2. Find the Best Exercise Equipment for You

The LEIKE X Bike Ultra-Quiet Folding Exercise Bike has proven to be a valuable investment. My best friend recommended it after experiencing amazing results. I was apprehensive at first because of the color, (I know) but I can be a bit boujee at times. However, I’m grateful that I didn’t allow that yellow to deter me.

This exercise bike is extremely lightweight, quiet, and has a magnetic upright. It takes up very little space and the best part, it’s on wheels! So it’s super easy to pull in and out of my walk-in closet. This bike is a great way to get cardio in while watching tv.

The Side Shaper Ab Machine is another lightweight miracle worker. If you’re like me, the idea of doing crunches and sit-ups the old-fashioned way is dreadful. With chronic back and neck pain from car accidents, those exercises became nearly impossible for me.

However, this Side Shaper Ab Machine is a Godsend! All it takes is 5 minutes a day to feel like you’ve done 1000 crunches! It features different levels of difficulty to encourage your physical growth and form. I cannot say enough about this magnificent machine! It folds down for easy, under the bed storage.

3. Make Healthy Food Choices

Consuming mostly fats, sugars, and processed foods are detrimental to both your physical and mental health.

But knowing that truth doesn’t necessarily make cutting processed foods and sugar out of your diet, easy. Educating yourself about the role food plays in your physical and mental health is your best ally in overcoming unhealthy eating habits.

There are a plethora of podcasts and documentaries that inform and encourage. Recently, I’ve begun reading a highly-accredited and recommended book called, Vegucation over Medication.

Written by Dr. Bobby J. Price, this book is highly informative and a must-read for anyone suffering from illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Additionally, the documentary, Food Inc. is an eye-opening look at where our food comes from. From the farmhouse to your kitchen table, this is a must-watch film for gauging what foods are best for your everyday diet. And which foods to avoid!

4. Boost Your Immune System

Choose healthy foods to feel energized and to naturally boost your immune system. Include foods rich in vitamins A, B, D, and E. As well as, foods with folic acid, iron, selenium, and zinc.

Foods that Boost Your Immune System

  • Oranges/Citrus Fruits/Kiwis/Papaya
  • Garlic/Ginger/Turmeric
  • Almonds
  • Blueberries
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Spinach/Broccoli/Red Bell Peppers
  • Green Tea/Kefir

Google is your best friend for finding creative ways to prepare these foods in nutritious ways. Keep a bag of Dove Dark Chocolates on hand. These will help satisfy sugar cravings. Plus, they are the best dark chocolates ever! Did you know that broccoli reduces (eliminates) those intense sugar cravings?

In addition to boosting your immune system with healthy food choices, add a vitamin C supplement. My family added Emergen-C to our daily routine and it’s been a game-changer.

Additional Self-Care Tips for Moms to Boost Immune Systems

  • Frequent and Proper Hand-washing
  • Practice good oral hygiene
  • Avoid alcohol (moderation)
  • Avoid smoking (completely)
  • Reduce your stress
  • Proper diet, exercise, and sleep

5. Get Adequate Sleep

The first step in getting adequate sleep is a comfortable bed. We spend nearly half of our lifetime lying around in bed! In other words, if you’re sleeping on a hand-me-down mattress from 10 years ago, it’s time to upgrade your room.

Your bed should be the most comfortable space in your home. After researching mattresses, I opted to try a memory foam bed instead of the traditional spring mattress.

They definitely do not have the same bounce. However, I have experienced a reduction in sciatic pain and headaches. I used to wake up with a headache almost every day and that has changed since switching to the memory foam mattress.

Make up your bed with a hypoallergenic down comforter and some soft pillows and you’ve got yourself a sleeping sanctuary. Choose bamboo sheets for a sustainable, breathable fabric that helps keep your body cool and free of night sweats.

6. Take a Bubble Bath

If you’re not a bath person, make sure that you get a nice steamy shower to yourself. No mom interruptions. Sing into your shampoo bottle and enjoy 15-minutes alone. If bubbles aren’t your forte, you have to try fizzy bath bombs! They are a delightful addition to any bathtub and the smells will help your stresses melt away.

Mental Health Self-Care Tips for Moms

Taking care of your mental health is critical to everyone’s well-being. But especially, mothers! It is exhausting to never get any — you time.

It’s important that you find a way to take a small amount of time for yourself each day. Whether it’s from your spouse, or older children who can help with the babies, or during nap-time. Do it!

It’s real easy to make excuses as to why we don’t have the ability or time to care for ourselves. But the truth is, most of us do. We simply allow for things like the television and scrolling our phones to fill that time instead.

7. Take a Social Media Hiatus

Speaking of scrolling, take a break from social media. And if you’re confident enough to remove social media from your life altogether, do it!

You can do it.

While at first, I felt disconnected and withdrawn, leaving Facebook for a year created ample time for personal growth and new experiences in my life.

Initially, I was concerned that I would lose touch with everybody. But that was not the case. The people who care about remaining in your life, will. Remove the apps from your phone and deactivate those accounts.

Try it for at least a month and take notice of how your mental health has improved from not being bogged down with bad news and negative people in the feed.

8. Turn Off the News

Do you realize that people who watch the news are more angry, depressed, stressed, and suffer from anxiety? It’s true. Do you find yourself experiencing any of these conditions?

Turning off the news can bring immediate and long-term relief to the state of your mental health. People are not capable of taking in and processing so much information. Especially, all the negative, all of the time.

9. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing your awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It’s being consciously aware of each thought that enters that beautiful head of yours.

Take time to slow down and become aware. Like anything else, it will take some practice before you can quiet your mind. Using mindfulness cards and affirmations is a great way to switch your mindset and develop a state of mindfulness.

10. Learn Something New

Learning something new is a form of self-care. In fact, a recent study indicated,

That people who learned new skills reported feeling higher self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with stress.

Consider learning how to cook, basic home repairs, or car maintenance. YouTube has thousands of tutorials that teach these life skills. Try learning a new language or how to play an instrument. Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn but have never made the time for?

Have you ever considered starting your own blog? Blogging is a fun project to explore new talents. Furthermore, it’s affordable, simple to set up, and can prove to be a lucrative endeavor, (if you’re searching for an at-home career).

I highly recommend Suzi Whitford’s Blog by Number Bundle. She’s made over a million dollars with her blog in only a few year’s time. This bundle has everything that you need to get your blog set-up and running smoothly in very little time.

With step-by-step video instruction, it’s impossible to mess it up! Additionally, the Blog by Number Bundle gives you lifetime access to future updates. Making it the best blogging investment for staying up-to-date and in the know.

11. Be Charitable

Did you know that being charitable has been shown to lower blood pressure, increase self-esteem, and lower stress levels? Furthermore, people have less incidence of depression, and even longer life, and greater happiness when they are giving back to others.

Whether it’s financial assistance or an act of social service, find ways to pay it forward and improve your mental health and well-being.

12. Create a Calming Atmosphere

Creating a calming atmosphere is perfect for restoring peace in the home. Whether it’s creating a bedroom sanctuary or embracing Feng Shui, add some peaceful elements into your home.

Start by eliminating clutter! Clutter is horrible for the psyche and creates unnecessary stress. It can even harbor your productivity. Donate what you can, regularly.

My favorite peaceful home additions are my indoor water fountains, LED candles for ambiance, and my Douni Sleep Sound Machine.

The Douni Sleep Sound Machine is much more than white noise. It features ocean waves (my favorite), thunderstorm, rainforest sounds, and more. I rotate through these sounds during different times of my day. Ocean waves are the best at putting me to sleep.

But I often listen to the rain sounds when I write and the rainforest when I meditate. This is my favorite of all the sleep sound machines I’ve encountered because it’s ideal for creating my perfect mood.

Spiritual Health Self-Care Tips for Moms

Taking care of your spiritual health plays a significant role in your overall well-being. Putting God at the center of your life, helps everything fall into place. EASIER said than done for many of us. Myself included.

However, it’s important to strive for this reality. So how do we get closer to God?

13. Get Into Nature

Getting into nature is an incredible way to nourish your soul. Spend time and marvel in creation any chance that you can afford.

Be respectful of mask regulations and find less crowded and seek secluded spots in nature to nurture your spiritual health. Ten minutes of fresh, ocean air can transform your entire week.

Take the kids for nature walks around the neighborhood, (or on socially distanced trails) and go on a scavenger hunt. Make a checklist and search for things you can find along your way.

This is a fantastic family-time activity. Sure to engage senses while getting a much-needed break from being cooped up in the house.

Suggestions for Nature Scavenger Hunt

  • Berries/Fruit
  • Pine Cones/Sticks
  • Flowers/Ferns/Moss/Foliage
  • Birds/Wildlife
  • Insects/Butterflies/Snails
  • Lizards/Snakes

14. Seek Enlightenment

Find ways to enlighten your soul. Some of my favorite ways to engage in enlightenment are by watching documentaries and listening to spiritual podcasts. Although, books are always fantastic resources for finding spiritual enlightenment.

Listening to the true stories of people from all around the world helps pull you out of your daily bubble. It’s easy to get so busy in our own corner of the world that we overlook the fact this is not everyone’s reality.

15. Prayer Journaling

In addition to actually praying, prayer journaling is a wonderful way to organize your requests. Additionally, it is incredible to look back at your prayers and see the areas that God has been fruitful in answering them.

If you enjoy writing but don’t feel confident in your prayer life, this is it, mama. I completely relate and have found writing my prayers much easier than speaking them. It doesn’t matter how you pray, so long as you’re connecting to God.

16. Meditation

Meditation is another fantastic opportunity to connect with God, practice mindfulness, and center your calm. Did you know that meditation has short term benefits for the nervous system? Some of those benefits include:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Anxiety reduction
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower blood cortisol levels
  • Stress reduction

17. Love Your Neighbor

If you’re a Christian, you’re familiar with the commandment to, love thy neighbor. And it’s important to practice that commandment every day. Of course, you don’t have to be a Christian to respect and practice this selfless act.

The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.

Mark 12:31 NIV Bible

During these times, wearing your mask is one of the simplest ways to honor the commandment of loving your neighbor. Additionally, you can (and should) pray for your neighbors. If you’re searching for alternative ways to love your neighbor, here are 42 Incredible Ways to Pay it Forward!
